Stephen King is an American author born September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Maine in 1970. Often called the King of Horror, he has published professionally since 1967 across horror, fantasy, suspense, and crime fiction, producing around two hundred short stories alongside dozens of novels. His debut novel, Carrie (1974), launched a career that includes landmark works such as The Shining (1977), The Stand (1978), Different Seasons (1982), It (1986), Misery (1987), and 11/22/63 (2011). King has also published several novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman and has collaborated with other writers, including Peter Straub and his own sons, novelists Joe Hill and Owen King. His fantasy work extends beyond horror into the genre-blending Dark Tower series, which connects much of his broader body of fiction. King's honors include the O. Henry Award for the short story The Man in the Black Suit in 1996, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller for 11/22/63, the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2003, the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Master Award in 2007, and the National Medal of Arts in 2014. He has been married to Tabitha Spruce since 1971 and lives in Maine, where he is a noted philanthropist.
