Vladimir Colin (born Jean Colin, 1 May 1921, Bucharest; died 6 December 1991, Bucharest) was a Romanian short story writer, novelist, poet, journalist, translator and comic book author, who also wrote as Ștefan Colin. He came from a family of emancipated Romanian Jews and was active as a writer from 1945 to 1984. Early in his career he was a communist and socialist realist writer and held posts in censorship and propaganda; from the mid-1950s he concentrated on literature and moved toward fantasy and science fiction. His fairy-tale collection Basme won the 1953 State Prize for Prose. His other works include the mythopoeic novel Pentagrama (1967), the sword-and-sorcery novel Divertisment pentru vrăjitoare (1972) and the science fantasy Babel (1978), his best-known work abroad. From 1970 until his death he was an editor at the Writers' Union magazine Viața Românească. A stroke in 1984 permanently impaired his writing. He received Eurocon awards, including Best Novel for Babel, and a lifelong achievement award in 1989.
