Synopsis

Presented as a translation of ancient texts recovered in northern Dobruja, the book gathers the myths of Vamland, a vanished civilization said to have lived around the Black Sea. The tales begin in the heavens, where the god-of-gods Ormag rules over the lesser gods and looks down on the people below. On earth, a human named Vam, whose story is bound up with his companion Una, comes to stand against Ormag's cruelty. The stories move between gods, giants, warriors and lovers, among them the giant Panca and the radiant Saian and beautiful Mastara. They also tell of the fall of a glorious city, the origin of Ormag himself, and a contest between rivals. Together they form a mythology of human fear, courage and resistance.

Notes

  • A cycle of linked myths rather than a conventional novel, counted here as one book. Later Romanian editions appeared in 1974, 1986 and 2000; an abridged English version, Legends from Vamland, translated by Luiza Carol, was published in 2001.
  • From the series record (Legendele Țării lui Vam): A single cycle of linked myths about the vanished civilization of Vamland, published as one book.
