Vladimir Vasilyev was born on August 8, 1967, in Mykolaiv, in the Ukrainian SSR, then part of the Soviet Union. A Ukrainian science fiction and fantasy writer, novelist, and musician, he has been active since 1991. His breakout novel, Death or Glory (1998), was written under the influence of David Brin's Startide Rising and The Uplift War duology and proved commercially successful in Russia, with 17,000 copies issued by 2000 and an English print-on-demand edition following in 2004. He co-authored the novel Day Watch (2000) with fellow Russian-language author Sergei Lukyanenko, contributing to the celebrated Watch series later adapted into a major Russian film franchise. Vasilyev has also written for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game universe, including the novel Hide-and-Seek on Centre Line (2010). Beyond his literary career, he is an accomplished guitarist, singer, and composer, best known for his song "Battlecat's March," which draws on themes from the work of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, legendary Soviet science fiction writers. For his contributions to the genre, Vasilyev received the Aelita Prize, one of the most prestigious honors in Russian-language science fiction literature. He maintains an official website chronicling his combined literary and musical career.
