Synopsis

Set again in Moscow, with part of the action extending to Prague, this installment breaks from the pattern of the earlier books by narrating events chiefly from the Dark side of the treaty. Its opening section centers on Alisa Donnikova, a young Dark witch recuperating at a Black Sea retreat for Others, where she becomes involved with Igor, a Light magician recovering there for his own reasons. Their bond crosses the line the Night Watch and Day Watch are sworn to keep intact, since Others of opposing sides are forbidden from using their power against one another outside sanctioned duels. As the Dark and Light watches continue their uneasy patrols enforcing the old treaty, the growing closeness between Alisa and Igor threatens to draw both organizations, and the hidden agendas of their leaders, into a confrontation neither side wants exposed.
