Synopsis

Some time after the events of the earlier novels, Anton Gorodetsky is now married to Svetlana, and the two are raising their young daughter Nadya, whose emerging nature as an Other of virtually unlimited power sets her apart from any child the Watches have encountered before. Anton, still serving as a Light magician with the Night Watch, is drawn into investigating unsettling reports that a powerful Other has promised an ordinary human the ability to become an Other outright, something long believed impossible and dangerous, since a broken promise of that kind can cause the human involved to waste away. The trail leads toward Kostya Saushkin, a vampire connected to the Day Watch, and toward the Book of Fuaran, a legendary artifact said to hold the forbidden means of turning humans into Others, an object whose recovery could upend the fragile balance between the two.
