Sergei Lukyanenko was born Sergei Vasilyevich Lukyanenko on April 11, 1968, in Karatau, Kazakhstan, then part of the Soviet Union. In 1986 he enrolled at the Alma-Ata State Medical Institute, majoring in psychotherapy, and worked as a physician before dedicating himself to writing. He began writing as a student and started earning income from fiction in 1992; after relocating to Moscow in 1996 he became one of Russia's most prominent science fiction and fantasy authors. His novels, including Labyrinth of Reflections, are known for action-driven plots exploring moral questions about preserving one's humanity while wielding great power. Lukyanenko's honors include the Aelita Award (1999), multiple Interpresscon Awards, and the Kurd Lasswitz Prize (2008) for Spectrum; he was also named Europe's best science fiction author at Eurocon 2003 and received the ESFS Award for Best Author that same year. Beyond fiction, he has worked as a journalist and blogger, maintaining an official author website.
