Wolfgang Hohlbein was born on August 15, 1953, in Weimar, East Germany. After completing school, he worked as an industrial clerk and night watchman while beginning to write in his spare time. He married Heike in 1974, and together they raised six children, including author Rebecca Hohlbein. He gained recognition in 1982 when he and his wife won a fantasy and science fiction writing contest, after which they quit their jobs to become full-time authors and relocated to Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia, where they still live. His breakthrough came with Märchenmond (published in English as Magic Moon), which became a bestseller and sold more than two million copies as a trilogy, remaining his and Heike's signature achievement. He also created Der Hexer (The Warlock), a pulp fiction series based on Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, and wrote tie-in novels for Indiana Jones, Stargate, and Pirates of the Caribbean. With over 200 published books and more than 43 million copies sold, Hohlbein ranks among Germany's most prolific and commercially successful fantasy authors. His works have been adapted into theater productions, radio plays, and films, including a 2020 Sony film based on his Die Wolf-Gäng series, cementing his status as a major figure in German-language popular fiction.
