Synopsis
Max is a failure in our world who finds rest only in vivid dreams. He is invited into the magical world of Echo, where he becomes the right-hand man of Sir Juffin Halli, head of the Small Secret Investigation Corps. The corps enforces the kingdom's legal code so that magic does not damage the World's Heart, the source that lets the locals practise sorcery. Across the linked novellas of this volume Max settles into the city, takes on his first cases and discovers his own talent for magic, while illegal sorcerers and exiled masters keep the investigators busy.
