Synopsis
Sir Max has many tales he has never told: cases from the Secret Investigation Service, the past of the Kettari Hunter and his senior colleagues, and events he witnessed awake and in dreams. Afraid they will be lost, he gathers his old friends on a remote island where, for ten days a year, the Hababur wind blows and anything can happen. Two stories open the cycle. In the first, told by Max, the king must perform a secret mission on the island of Murimakh every year and no one may watch, except Max. In the second, Lady Melamori Blimm tells of Tulan, a country where detectives take on their clients' guilt.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
