Synopsis
After years away, Sir Max returns to Echo, which has changed considerably. He writes from the tower on the roof of the Shaggy House, and the story begins with him stumbling over his own corpse. The novel opens the Dreams of Echo cycle, which the publisher describes as a story of a city in an unprecedented crisis, where dreamers fall prey to nightmares and mysterious pictures appear in the sky, and Max has to find his bearings among old friends and unfamiliar new houses.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
