Synopsis
Sir Max seems to walk both the path of the wise warrior and the path of the fool, and by the book's own summary he ends up dead. He keeps telling stories anyway, and his listeners pay for them with tiny, invisible pieces of their hearts. In the first novella Max acts as teacher to newcomers who want to join a club. In the title novella he learns the secrets of death and the afterlife, which prove more absurd than frightening. The remaining novellas follow a detective plot about a wizard's power that cannot simply be locked away, and a darker story in which Max's world begins to break apart.
