Synopsis
Sir Max sets out with his colleague Numminorikh for the Gugland marshes to solve a series of mysterious murders. Relying on his sharp mind and his Death Balls, he follows a trail that leads towards the leader of the vampires. Earlier, a new villain arrives in Echo and brings a deadly fever whose victims slowly dissolve into water, which gives the volume a darker tone than the earlier books. The second novella begins as an inspection of the Nunda penal colony in winter, among followers of the Order of the Long Path, and soon takes an unexpected turn.
