Synopsis

Sir Melifaro, the Secret Investigator of the United Kingdom, narrates this book. The story is set in the Coffee Dregs tavern, which stands on the border between a newly born reality and the chaotic realm of possibilities that have not yet taken shape. Old friends and colleagues gather there to talk about the past and avoid discussing a future that is almost upon them. Melifaro recounts how he became a Secret Investigator and touches on puzzles, fashion and magic, his own double, a cheerful ghost, a plot against the King, the upbringing of sentient dishes, and the most dreadful man in the kingdom.
