Synopsis
This volume is narrated by the sage Sir Kofa Yoh, who admits that he barely understands the events he describes. The book is built around the idea that people are changeable: we think we know someone who has always shown the same side, until the person suddenly reveals another self that surprises even them. The story deals with love, pain, foolishness and mercy, and its characters keep unsettling one another and themselves. The title figure is Mr. Gro, whose grief takes on a life of its own.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
