Synopsis
Four centuries after the Rakan dynasty fell, the kingdom of Talig is ruled by the descendants of the man who overthrew it. Five years earlier, Duke Egmont Oakdell led a rebellion against the crown, and Marshal Roque Alva defeated and killed him. Now Egmont's young son Richard Oakdell comes to the capital to be trained as a nobleman at court, among people who sided with the victors. He is a boy raised on stories of honor and loyalty, arriving in a city of intrigue, duels and long memories. The book follows his first steps there and the wider kingdom around him, where old grudges and a changing age are already beginning to press on every household.
