Vera Viktorovna Kamsha was born on 5 November 1962 in Lviv, then in the Ukrainian SSR. She trained as a petroleum engineer at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute and then moved to Leningrad, where she first worked as an assistant to a deputy of the city council in the early 1990s. In 1994 she turned to journalism. A meeting with the fantasy writer Nick Perumov in 2001 led her to begin writing fantasy, and her debut novel, Тёмная звезда (2001, Eksmo), opened the Хроники Арции cycle, which continued through 2003. From 2004 she published the Отблески Этерны cycle with Eksmo, a historical fantasy set in a different world, Kertiana, with an early modern European feel. She has also published under the pseudonyms Gatty and Gemma. Her books have drawn Russian genre awards; her 2005 novel Лик Победы was named best domestic fantasy book of the year by the magazine Мир Фантастики, and the cycle has been adapted as the television series Этерна.
