Synopsis

In the capital of the ancestral Rakan kings, the exile Aldo Rakan is crowned at last in the city where his forebear was once betrayed and killed. The old order has fallen, and the Raven, Marshal Roque Alva, a descendant of the traitor, is in the new king's hands and waits for trial. The four great houses that guard the world are bound together by an invisible chain yet each walks a different road. Behind them, omens gather: those who fall behind at the turn are expected to meet the dappled mare that signals death. The volume opens a new reign, with the cost of old betrayals still to be paid.
