Synopsis
Strange signs appear on the roads of Kertiana, among them the track of a blind horseshoe, yet the rulers of the world ignore the old prophecies. Cardinal Silvestre hires the military talent of Marshal Alva to secure bread for the realm, and Alva rides ahead of his army to the besieged city of Felp. The novel follows several threads at once: the marshal and his young squire, the exiled Alduin Rakan, who hopes to regain his ancestral throne, and Robert Epinay, who must choose between a living conscience and a dead honor. The old powers of the world begin to move, and the characters learn that events set in motion long ago can no longer be stopped.
