Synopsis
In the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, the Red Flower Society is a secret brotherhood sworn to overthrow Manchu rule and restore Han Chinese government. When its founder dies, his adopted son Chen Jialuo takes the leadership. After a senior member, Wen Tailai, is captured because he knows a secret about the emperor's origins, the society mounts a rescue and forms an alliance with Uyghur tribesmen in the northwest. The brotherhood must weigh loyalty, kinship and politics as it learns the emperor's identity and tries to force a reckoning, while Chen Jialuo's own loyalties are tested by a romance with a Uyghur princess. (English title: The Book and the Sword.)
