Synopsis

The novel follows the early life of Hu Fei, raised by his guardian Ping Asi, in Qing China under the Qianlong Emperor. He is drawn into feuds at the Shang Family Castle, a long rivalry with the swordsman Miao Renfeng, and a clash with the tyrant Feng Tiannan. He swears brotherhood with Zhao Banshan, and forms a bond with the herbalist Cheng Lingsu, whose fate shapes the young man's path. The story explains how Hu Fei became the swordsman later known as the Flying Fox. (English title: The Young Flying Fox; also translated Side Story of the Flying Fox.)
