Synopsis

Above the Veil finds Tal and Milla navigating the Castle's deepening political intrigue while working to understand more about the Veil, the mystical barrier that shields their world and is maintained by seven Keystones set atop each of the Castle's towers. Tal allies with members of the Underfolk, an enslaved population within the Castle known among their own as the Freefolk, in an attempt to reach the top of the Red Tower and secure one of the vital Keystones, facing dangers along the way tied to the Castle's magic. Milla, meanwhile, returns to her home region of Odris and makes a discovery that reshapes her understanding of her own role in the wider conflict, as both storylines push toward a shift in the balance of power between the ruling Chosen and those beneath them.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Seventh Tower): A completed 6-book middle-grade secondary-world fantasy sequence (Scholastic, 2000-2001), distinct from Garth Nix's Old Kingdom and Keys to the Kingdom universes: an unrelated setting split between the underground Castle and the sunlit surface world Aenir/the Veil.
