Synopsis

Set in Solidar six years after the failed High Holder uprising, this eleventh volume of the Imager Portfolio shifts focus to Charyn, the heir to the rex, who is kept apart from real power even as he tries to educate himself for eventual rule. When Jarolian privateers begin menacing Solidar's shipping lanes, an assassination attempt is made against Charyn's younger brother, and threatening messages demand that the rex build more warships or see further violence visited on the royal family. Charyn must work to understand statecraft, finance and the machinery of Solidar's government while the threat to his family and the kingdom's shipping grows, all while his father continues to hold him at arm's length from decisions that increasingly concern him directly.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Imager Portfolio): Twelve novels across three story arcs (Rhennthyl's, then Quaeryt's, then Alastar and Prince Charyn's) set in one continuous world and timeline, treated as a single series rather than a multi-series world.
