Synopsis

Now leading the Shieldwives, a band of desert warriors within the Thirteenth Tribe, Çeda faces a city of Sharakhai left vulnerable after a failed campaign, with rival kingdoms circling to invade. She seizes the opening to pursue her larger goal: freeing Sehid-Alaz, the immortal king of her own people, cursed centuries earlier and transformed into one of the tormented asirim enslaved to Sharakhai's rulers. As outside armies close in on the city and enemies within move against her, Çeda races to find a way to break the ancient curse binding the asirim, while contending with the Blade Maidens sent to hunt her, her own father among the ruling kings, and the will of the gods themselves. The pressure pushes the surviving Thirteenth Tribe back toward the mountains where they were nearly destroyed four centuries before.
