Synopsis

Binti, a 2015 novella, follows Binti, a gifted young woman of the Himba people skilled in mathematical harmonizing, who becomes the first of her people ever accepted to the prestigious intergalactic Oomza University. Leaving her family and homeland behind without their blessing, since the Himba rarely leave home at all, Binti boards a live starship bound for the university, carrying with her the otjize, a sacred red clay paste central to her people's identity, that marks her as an outsider among her mostly alien fellow passengers. Her journey to Oomza University, meant to be the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, is disrupted partway there by a violent, dangerous encounter that puts both her identity and her new future to a test far greater than she anticipated.
