Overview
Binti, a gifted young mathematician of the Himba people, becomes the first of her clan admitted to Oomza University, the galaxy's greatest center of learning, on a distant planet. Her journey there is violently interrupted by the Meduse, a jellyfish-like alien race at war with the university's people, and Binti must draw on her own harmonizing gift, her culture's sacred otjize body-clay, and her family's ancestral communion to survive and broker peace. Nnedi Okorafor's 3rd separate universe in this canon, after Who Fears Death and The Nsibidi Scripts.

How do we know this?
Admission: Binti admitted; Core Canon = the 3 core novellas; SF/fantasy boundary noted accepted 2026-08-18
Sources: (see source tier definitions)
Last reviewed: 2026-08-18
Rule: Core = the 3 Tor.com novellas (2015-2018). Expanded = the interstitial short story Binti: Sacred Fire and the 2019 omnibus repackaging. Genre-boundary note: Binti is more often classified and awarded as science fiction (interstellar travel, alien contact) than fantasy, but its sacred otjize body-clay ritual, ancestral communion, and near-mystical harmonizing gift read as science-fantasy, admitted here transparently, the same way this canon already treats Dragonriders of Pern's own SF/fantasy boundary.
