Overview

The Mabinogion Tetralogy is Evangeline Walton's four-novel prose retelling of the medieval Welsh mythological cycle known as the Mabinogi. Each novel expands one of the cycle's four “branches” into a full narrative, following the god-king Pwyll, the sea-god Bran and his sister Branwen, the shapeshifting sorceress Arianrhod's son Lleu, and finally the magician Gwydion and the flower-woman Blodeuwedd, while staying close to the original medieval source rather than inventing a new plot around it.

The books were written and published out of their in-story chronological order: the earliest published (as The Virgin and the Swine, 1936, reissued as The Island of the Mighty in 1970) tells the cycle's last story, and the volume that opens the internal chronology, Prince of Annwn, appeared last, in 1974. The author's own note on her method (“I almost never contradict sources, I only add and interpret”) describes a deliberately faithful, expansive retelling rather than a loose adaptation.
