Synopsis
Holla-Sayan, a caravan guard, flees the bloody conquest of a lakeside town and stops to help two abandoned creatures: a girl and a dying dog. The girl is Attalissa, the incarnation of a goddess who has lost her power, and the dog is the Blackdog, a shapeshifting guardian spirit and former champion of the gods. When the Blackdog possesses him, Holla-Sayan has little choice but to take the powerless goddess and run for the desert road. Behind them follow necromancy, treachery, massacres and rebellions, and gods who are dead, lost or mad. The girl he is protecting may also be the cause of his own doom.
