Synopsis

At age ten, Vaelin Al Sorna is left at the iron gate of the Sixth Order, a martial religious brotherhood devoted to battle and the Faith, by his father, a Battle Lord to the king who severs him from his family and his expected inheritance. Raised and trained within the Order through his adolescence, Vaelin struggles with anger over his lost birthright while enduring the brutal discipline of warrior training and uncovering painful truths about his mother and his father's choices. Years later, as an adult, he is held captive in a southern nation, awaiting a duel his captors believe he cannot survive, and is made to recount his life story to a historian sent to chronicle it, a narration that gradually reveals how a boy abandoned at a gate became bound to a destiny larger than himself.
