Synopsis

The second novel in the Raven's Shadow series picks up after warrior Vaelin Al Sorna's return from King Janus's wars. Seeking distance from court intrigue and further bloodshed, he accepts the title of Tower Lord and is sent to govern and defend the Realm's remote Northern Reaches, hoping to build a quieter life. That hope proves fragile: the story follows several other point-of-view characters alongside him, including Frentis, who is held under another's sinister control, and Princess Lyrna, who travels to negotiate peace with the Lonak tribes while facing rebel attacks. Old enemies seeking revenge against Vaelin, a Faith split by rival leaders, a weak new king overshadowed by his ambitious sister, and reports of a mysterious force massing to the south all draw Vaelin back toward the very conflict he tried to leave behind.
