Anthony Ryan is a Scottish writer of fantasy and science fiction, born in 1970, who holds a degree in Medieval History and worked as a full-time researcher, spending much of his adult life in London, before switching to full-time writing. He self-published his debut novel Blood Song in 2011, which led to a three-book deal with Penguin Books in May 2012, and is best known for the Raven's Shadow series that began with that novel. He has also written the Draconis Memoria fantasy series and continues to self-publish a series of SF Noir novellas alongside his traditionally published work. Prior to writing, he traveled extensively, and his historical research background informs the detailed, grounded military and political settings of his fiction.
