Synopsis
The second novel of the Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy continues directly from Wards of Faerie, carrying forward the quest surrounding the recovered Elfstones. Arlingfant Elessedil, sister of the Druid Aphenglow, is revealed to be the designated successor to the Ellcrys, the ancient tree whose magic keeps demonic forces sealed away from the Four Lands, a role that will demand an overwhelming personal sacrifice from her. As the consequences of the earlier expedition ripple outward, the Ohmsford twins Railing and Redden, the Druids Aphenglow, Bombax, and Seersha, and their companions Mirai Leah and Cymrian confront mounting dangers and impossible choices, each thread of the ensemble story pushing them toward increasingly desperate decisions as the fate of the Ellcrys and the barrier it maintains hangs in the balance.
