Synopsis
Opening the Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy a century after the events of Straken, the novel finds the Four Lands increasingly distrustful of magic and those who practice it, following the diminished standing of the Third Council of Druids. Aphenglow Elessedil, a Druid at Paranor, discovers an ancient diary describing how the long-lost Elfstones were scattered centuries earlier during a war with the Darklings, and the weakened Druid Council, led by the Ard Rhys Khyber Elessedil, decides to mount a dangerous expedition to recover them in hopes of restoring public faith in magic. Khyber receives a warning from the shade of Allanon that the mission will bring danger and disappointment. The expedition is led by Aphenglow and fellow Druids including Bombax and Seersha, joined by the Ohmsford twins Railing and Redden, whose presence Allanon's warning required, along with the warrior Mirai Leah and the airship captain Cymrian.
