Synopsis
Concluding the High Druid of Shannara trilogy directly after the events of Tanequil, Pen Ohmsford has obtained the darkwand but is captured by Druid forces loyal to the illegitimate High Druid Shadea a'Ru, agreeing to imprisonment to spare his companions, including the dwarf Tagwen and the troll leader Kermadec, from harm. Meanwhile Grianne Ohmsford, the rightful High Druid, remains trapped in the demon realm of the Forbidding, and the elf-girl Khyber Elessedil stows away aboard a Druid airship to try to help, while Bek Ohmsford and Rue Meridian work to escape captivity of their own aboard a hostile airship far from home.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series High Druid of Shannara: position 3 of 3: previous Tanequil (2004)
- Internal chronology, within Shannara: position 22 of 32: previous Tanequil (2004) · next Wards of Faerie (2012)
