Synopsis
Brokedown Palace, set outside Steven Brust's main Dragaera sequence, follows four royal brothers in the small Eastern kingdom of Fenario. After King Laszlo banishes his youngest brother Miklos, Miklos nearly drowns in the river but is rescued by Bolk, a mysterious talking horse, and spends time in the neighboring land of Faerie gaining strange knowledge before returning home to seek reconciliation with his family. His homecoming coincides with the sudden growth of an otherworldly tree in his old bedroom, a tree that draws power from the palace's river and threatens the crumbling structure itself. When the kingdom's patron goddess demands the tree be destroyed, Miklos comes to believe it represents something the decaying palace and kingdom desperately need, setting him on a collision course with his family, his god, and the fate of Fenario itself.
