Synopsis
Burned is the seventh novel in the Alex Verus series and opens with the diviner Alex Verus learning that the Council has issued an execution order against him, giving him only about a week before it can be carried out. To survive, he has to distance himself from the people who depend on him, including his apprentice Luna and his friends Anne and Variam, so that they are not caught in the fallout, while simultaneously trying to build alliances among Council mages who might intervene on his behalf. His efforts to save himself put him in direct opposition to his former master and the Dark mages working with him, forcing Alex into a dangerous balancing act between political maneuvering and open confrontation. The novel follows his attempt to escape the sentence without sacrificing the relationships and principles that separate him from the mages hunting him.
