Synopsis

In 1360, during the Hundred Years' War, Nicolas Eymerich is sent to the border between French and English-held lands, where an army of the undead is terrorising the countryside and threatening the truce of Brétigny. He sets out to learn what lies behind them. Two other threads run through the book. In an Italian city shrouded in permanent fog, three Jesuit priests investigate three strangely similar young women who guard a mysterious girl. Elsewhere an unnamed prisoner, held in a bronze prison outside time and space, sets out a physics theory meant to explain the collective unconscious and paranormal events. The goddess Hecate lies behind the central mystery, and the tone is dreamlike.
