Synopsis
In 1354 Nicolas Eymerich accompanies King Peter IV of Aragon to Sardinia, where the Aragonese forces besiege Alghero to put down a revolt led by the judge Mariano d'Arborea. Mariano is backed by a mysterious, terrifying deity called Sardus Pater. The story is told across two timelines. In the twentieth century the psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, who has fled the Nazis for America, makes a major scientific discovery and is imprisoned. In his cell he begins to experience hallucinations that appear to link him to the medieval inquisitor, and the two men's stories draw together.
