Synopsis

In 1358 Inquisitor Nicolas Eymerich is sent to Castres in southern France to destroy the Masc, a secret sect bound up with blood rituals. He carries out his task with a vast pyre that kills most of the townspeople, among them Cathars, the bishop and monks. A second storyline begins in the United States in 1952. Lycurgus Pinks, a former Ku Klux Klan member, plans to wipe out Black Americans by spreading sickle cell anemia. His scheme grows into a genetic mutation that becomes a global epidemic reaching everyone. The two plots remain separate for most of the book and meet only near the end.
