Synopsis

In Zaragoza in 1361, Nicolas Eymerich fails to exorcise an apostate Christian and turns to the city's Jewish quarter, working with the converted Jew Alatzar. He finds a mystery of shining wheels of light and dog-headed monsters, in which anyone who owns a copy of the Picatrix, a book of magic, is killed. Alongside the Arab poet Ibn Khaldun he follows the trail beyond the Pillars of Hercules to the Fortunate Isles, to stop a prophecy of Christian doom. In the present day the physicist Marcus Frullifer investigates an asylum whose patients bark like dogs, while two armies, RACHE and Euroforce, fight an African sorcerer-king. Eymerich also faces his feelings for a Jewish prisoner, Myriam.
