Synopsis
In 1369, during the civil war in Castile, the castle of Montiel is under siege by the forces of Henry of Trastamara, who are led largely by mercenaries. The inquisitor Nicolas Eymerich is sent to investigate reports that the besiegers use black magic and that the defenders rely on cabalistic practice. Dominicans dispatched by the Pope are assigned to counter this with demonology. A parallel storyline is set in the Dora concentration camp in the Second World War, where an SS officer carries out an experiment to revive a dead body in support of his electrical research.
