Synopsis

In 1362 Inquisitor General Nicolas Eymerich is sent to Cahors in France to find out why two fellow friars died and why their bodies are in a strange condition. He witnesses prodigies: swarms of ravenous stag beetles, distortions of time, and friars who are deformed and deranged. The clues lead to the alchemical text Aurora Consurgens, falsely attributed to Thomas Aquinas, and to the Mater Terribilis, a hostile and destructive femininity. The same region appears seventy years later during the story of Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais, and again in the twenty-first century, where soldiers of RACHE and Euroforce slaughter each other under electronic illusions that seem demonic.
