Synopsis
In 1366 Nicolas Eymerich is removed from his post as inquisitor after intrigues by Peter IV of Aragon. He travels to Padua for a Dominican chapter meeting, where he clashes with Petrarch over a disturbing painting, and then joins a crusade led by Amedeo of Savoy to relieve Constantinople. At the declining Byzantine court he finds political and esoteric plots built around the constellation Orion, the biblical hunter-king Nimrod and the Archangel Raphael, and a mystery tied to the Giants of Scripture. Two other threads run alongside: a far-future war in Iraq, a century old and fought with giants and monsters, and Professor Frullifer, released from an asylum by US Army officers to attempt an experiment on the star Betelgeuse.
