Synopsis
In 1372 Nicolas Eymerich is in Sicily and Naples, again trying to save Christendom. This time his enemy is Ramón de Tàrrega, a converted Jew who secretly practises heresy and alchemy. Sicily is haunted by visions of flying discs, giant beings and deformed infants, and Eymerich traces them to the failed attempts of Lilith, also known as Myriam, to bear perfect children. A second storyline is set in the thirty-first century, where survivors on the Moon run a system that electroshocks a sedated humanity. The entity of the title, Rex, was born from Eymerich's alchemical quintessence and is trapped on the Moon, so the two eras are connected.
