Synopsis
In 1374 Pope Gregory XI sends Nicolas Eymerich to investigate an Aragonese royal adviser suspected of heresy and magic. His journey from Provence to the Piedmontese Alps is marked by strange omens that lead him to suspect a wider conspiracy against the Church. A parallel storyline follows the scientist Marcus Frullifer, who is abducted and taken to a Jesuit observatory, where his mathematical formula may help the Jesuits pursue ambitious goals. Interwoven passages come from a far-future text, the Gospel of the Moon. The book brings the inquisitor back seven years after the previous volume left him on his deathbed.
