Synopsis
Jaryd is a young blacksmith's son in the land of Tobyn-Ser who dreams of dark mages wearing the robes of the Order of Amarid, the guardians who protect the land. When a town is destroyed just as he saw in his dream, he realises that his visions are real. His uncle Baden, a mage of the Order, brings him into its ranks, where Jaryd begins to learn its history, including the old quarrel between its founders. Soon he and Baden find signs that a traitor inside the Order is bending its ideals to selfish ends. A delegation travels to a sacred grove to ask the shade of a dead mage for advice, and finds that history hides as much as it tells, and that those closest to them may be the least reliable.
