Synopsis
All resistance has been crushed: in minutes of overwhelming violence the Council's air-dreadnought fleet has destroyed the defences of Fiz Gorgo, and Xervish Flydd, Irisis and their allies have been condemned to die in an aerial spectacle staged to display Chief Scrutator Ghorr's power and majesty. Their one remaining hope is Nish, but he is trapped in a burning watchtower, hunted by the scrutators and by his former lover Ullii, whose twin brother he accidentally killed. Before he can rescue his friends he must persuade Ullii to spare him and overcome the most powerful cabal of mancers in the world, and even then, to win the war, the allies must defeat the scrutators and overthrow Nennifer, the corrupt Council's bastion, before the rampaging lyrinx overwhelm all Santhenar. The concluding volume of the quartet.

Book three is published in the United States and in later editions as Scrutator.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
