Synopsis

It is midwinter's day in Carcharon Tower and a dark moon is rising. In exchange for Llian's life and freedom, the Charon lord Rulke has persuaded Karan to betray her people and help him open the Way Between the Worlds, and now he has broken it open. As alien lords fight Rulke for control of the Way and abominations from the Void begin to ravage the land, the old enemies Mendark and Yggur must set aside their hatred if they are to seal it again, and the scheming Faelamor pursues her own ends. Karan faces the choice of a sacrifice that must end in a hideous death, and Llian, the cursed tale-teller, must decide between ambition and honour. The concluding volume of the quartet, in which the immortals at last reveal their true natures and the three worlds' fate is settled for a time.

Notes

  • From the series record (The View from the Mirror): Ian Irvine's first Three Worlds quartet: the chronicler Llian and the sensitive Karan, drawn into a three-thousand-year-old struggle between the immortals of the three human races trapped on Santhenar since the Way Between the Worlds was shattered, and the Mirror of Aachan that can reveal it.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The View from the Mirror: position 4 of 4: previous Dark is the Moon (1999)
  • Internal chronology, within The Three Worlds Cycle: position 13 of 15: previous The Perilous Tower (2020) · next Chimaera (2004)
