Synopsis
In this second volume of The Infernal Devices, Tessa Gray continues her search for her brother Nate while growing more entangled in the affairs of the London Institute and in her feelings for both Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs. The investigation into the Magister, Axel Mortmain, intensifies as the Shadowhunters uncover that Nate has secretly been working with him. Political tension within the Shadowhunter world also mounts as the Institute's residents face threats to their standing with the ruling Clave. The novel builds toward a betrayal from within the Institute's own household, as one resident's actions in aiding Mortmain lead to fatal consequences, pushing Tessa and her companions closer to uncovering Mortmain's true plans and his hidden base of operations.
