Synopsis
Danse Macabre is the fourteenth novel in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, unfolding over roughly a single day in St. Louis shortly after the events of the preceding novella Micah. Its title refers both to a visiting vampire ballet company hosted by Jean-Claude and to the tangled political maneuvering that surrounds the troupe's arrival, drawing several powerful visiting master vampires into the city and into Anita's orbit. Over the course of the day, Anita faces the possibility that she may be pregnant, along with signs that her shapeshifting abilities may be expanding to let her take multiple animal forms rather than just one. At the same time, she must manage the demands and suspicions of the visiting vampire dignitaries, whose presence raises the political stakes for Jean-Claude's rule even as Anita's personal and physical transformations continue to accelerate around her.
